Poetry Makes Nothing Happen: Thoughts on Ai Weiwei from the Indianapolis Museum of Art

In which John visits the Indianapolis Museum of Art, where his wife is a curator, and thinks about the work of the artist and dissident Ai Weiwei while walking through “According to What,” his first major retrospective in the United States. If you live in or near Indianapolis, you should really see the show. It’s very special, and will be here until July 21st.This is a lovely video from John Green explaining the importance of Ai Weiwei’s work. I had the opportunity to see this exhibition when it was at the Hirshhorn in DC, and it’s both stunning and sobering.
“Ai Weiwei: The most important artist alive”
Today my doctor told me I was in the best shape of all his patients. One should never tempt fate - but that’s pretty good for someone who remembers The Beatles (just vaguely - and I was way too young to buy records anyways).
I told him I have a crazy dog who loves to run and loves winter. The colder the better. He has guilted me into running outside nearly every day since Christmas - even when the windchill hit -32c. I also told the doc about how great the tumblr running community is. That the internet can be life changing. And how motivation is everything. He probably thinks I am nuts - but healthy.
Ray Manzarek | Break It Down | L Studio Presents (by lstudiopresents) #R.I.P. Ray Manzarek
May long weekend was a bust for sun-tanners but not bad for running. Although today was like a hurricane outside - I managed to get a long run in on Saturday (29K) and a trail run in on Sunday. Lake of the Woods is one of the world’s hidden gems but I now know why its called the “Rainy River District”. Good thing runners have different priorities. Otherwise I’d be really depressed.
You must have a power song for your running. This is 30 seconds of mine from last night’s MGMT concert.
Paul Gauguin, Vision After the Sermon, Jacob Wrestling the Angel, 1888, oil on canvas.
The painting depicts inner and outer truths, the spiritual and material world is merged. It also shows the influence of the study of the flat spatial compositions of Japanese prints.
Gauguin is a master of colour. I never realized it until I saw his retrospective at the Met. You know it’s great when a photo just can’t capture it.
